Uniquely American - A Memorial Day Tribute to Veterans

Memorial Day is unique to Americans of all ages. We pause and think about the sacrifices of men and women through the years to preserve our freedoms.

Soldiers young and old fought on a battlefield paying the ultimate price- laying down their lives.

In New York there is the Statue of Liberty which stands as a symbol for all who enter our nation, America, the land of the free and home of the brave. Freedom and liberty is why our military forces fought and died in many wars.

There is another statue on a hillside in Israel, where Jesus laid down his life for the souls of men and women - the cross - the symbol of our spiritual freedom.

On this Memorial Day, 2011 let us be thankful for the American soldier, brave, strong and true - protecting our country and guarding our freedoms.

Let us also be thankful for a Savior who likewise protects us and guarantees our freedom from sin.

Fueling the Spiritual Fire

In America, one out of every four fires is caused by arson, accounting for some half a million fires and $3 billion in direct property damage each year.

When people intentionally set fires, lives are lost and property is destroyed.  When God ignites spiritual fires, hearts are filled with love and lives are saved.

In Exodus 3:2-3, The Angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush.  Moses was fascinated because although the bush was clearly on fire, it wasn’t damaged and it didn’t burn up.

Whenever a person or a congregation is truly on fire with God’s love people will come from miles around just to watch them “burn.”

When God sets the fires of evangelism loose in His people, these fires will bring more light, more hope, and more resources through the door than we ever dreamed possible.

Though God’s fires don’t burn people out, they do need spiritual fuel.

Fuelish attitudes are ways of thinking that ignite ordinary people in the church with a passion for introducing their family, friends, neighbors, and complete strangers into
life-changing relationships with Jesus.

The Fuel of Kindness:  Colossians 3:12 says we are to clothe ourselves with kindness…That means wrapping ourselves up in God’s love for anyone in need.

For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Taking the focus off of ourselves and putting it on God and the needs of others
is amazingly fuelish.    The Fuel of Fun.  The Fuel of Prayer and Worship.

People whom God loves and we love are lost in the darkness of sin.  Each of us has
a part to play in their rescue.

How can we, in our finite beings, understand and grasp something so vast as the Kingdom of God?

By a process of renewal, God generously loves us and patiently leads us from our fleshly perspective into our true spiritual selves.  God is available always to lead us into spiritual reality.

It is in our personhood – experiences, feelings, thoughts and will – where we come to know exactly what the spiritual is.

Our “spirit” is who we are and from which we cannot escape.  It is our true nature and destiny.

Our “spirit” was created by God for Him to communicate His life and purpose into our daily life.

John 3:36 (MSG) - That is why whoever accepts and trusts the Son gets in on everything, life complete and forever!

He thus enables us to know His truth, to do His truth.  This truth is partial and incomplete – I Corinthians 13:12 – Now I know in part.  His truth empowers me to interact with Him in His Kingdom rule.

His truth equips us to live our purpose as we function in a conscious, personal relationship of interactive responsibility with Him.

Eternal life also means His Spirit dwells within us – we are “born of His Spirit” (John 3:5).

We are spirit, we have a soul, and we live in a body.

God created every living thing to live within its natural habitat.  What it is, dictates its world.  Move it out of its special environment and it struggles and dies.

As human beings we are created to live spiritual lives deriving our life from His life.  It is the way we are created to live.

Day by day we are to integrate our life into the spiritual world of His Kingdom rule.

Increasingly as we do this, our life is filled with His wisdom, knowledge, strength and power.

You and I are made for the spiritual environment of His Kingdom rule.
